A trick is a round of cards played, with each player playing one card. The player who plays the highest card of the suit led wins the trick. If your cards hold many trump suits or powerful combinations, display your melds to secure points and guide trick-taking efficiently. Each player receives 12 cards, and the remaining 24 cards are placed in a face-down stack in the center of the table, known as the kitty. The dealer shuffles the deck, then deals the cards clockwise until all the cards are distributed evenly between all players. (Except in a three hand option where a kitty of three cards is set aside for the bid winner). After the last cards are drawn, no more melds can be scored. The player that won the last trick will lead the next trick. The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of six hands. When playing Pinochle, it is important to keep track of the cards that have been played and the cards that are still in the deck. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card they choose. When you’re the high bidder, you want to dominate the trick-taking and try to control the start of as many tricks as possible. Pinochle is played with either two teams of two (Partnership Pinochle) or individually among three players (Cutthroat Pinochle). If you win a trick, you can make a meld, although you can only do one meld per turn. You place the meld face up on the table until you wish to play it. For every meld, you must take one card from your hand and put it on the table. Another meld is 40 Jacks, made up of four jacks from every suite and worth 40 points. The last meld is known as a dix (which is pronounced in the French style as "deece") and is made of a 9 of trumps. Fans may have kept the rules the same for the past 150 years since Pinochle was invented, but that doesn’t mean we can’t elevate your experience with modern conveniences.
